History...by far my most despised subject in school. Despite my A/B average, I loathed World History, American History, European
History and any other History course you can think of. I had no respect for History because it seemed History had no respect for me
and my African/African American heritage. Every History book read from K-12 depicted members of my culture as somebody's slave,
somebody's savage, somebody's inferior and somebody's boy. We were never anybody's master, anybody's intellectual, anybody's
superior nor anybody's man. Members of the African and African American cultures were constantly judged as in need of assistance
and improvement and never handed out judgments to other cultures. We were consistently depicted as simple-minded primitives and
never as forward thinking academics. I held a pure hatred for History because it seemed History truly hated us.
As I matured
in life's experiences and devoted many hours to the detailed analysis of our nation's education and social systems, I soon deciphered
that we were only taught one side of History during those K-12 years. We were taught the side of History that cast a semi-permanent
shadow of inferiority over black people; the side that psychologically constricted expectations of success; the side that taught us
we were inferior humanity, born to anguish, born for torment, born to agonize, born to live in a perpetual struggle.
Now
I have learned the whole-story of History, I see my culture from a new perspective. One-sided History taught me that people who exercised
the African culture were and are ignorant, savage, cannibals, always inferior to anyone of European descent. But the whole-story of
History taught me that those African men and women were intellectuals, creators of human civilization who very often dominated
those same Europeans who were theorized as superior. One-sided History taught me that African Americans were ignoramus
slaves, "po' 'ol niggers" who was "g'wine do dis', g'wine do dat'" and begged "massuh to have mercy on my po' soul." But the whole-story
of History taught me that black men and women of the 1500's, 1600's, 1700's and 1800's were philanthropists, businessmen, abolitionists,
publishers, politicians, clergymen, scholars, lawyers, landowners, etc. who lived life as free and righteous as any European
American during those same times. The whole-story taught me that Africans and thusly African Americans are the essence
of humanity who developed the first form of writing in Egypt and eventually taught Greeks how to conduct themselves in a civilized
manner.
Now that I have become fully acquainted with the whole-story of History, I love her. I now know myself because of it. The
whole-story has exponentially intensified the cultural self-esteem that was originally instilled in me by the Almighty Creator.
